Indiana’s food and agriculture industries and their suppliers contribute over $193.4 billion to the U.S. economy, according to a new report from National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA).
NASDA’s “Feeding the Economy” report also says Indiana’s ag industries account for more than 946,000 jobs, $52.2 billion in wages, $17.7 billion in taxes and $2 billion in international exports.
Overall, the nation’s food and ag industries contribute over $8.6 trillion to the U.S. economy—or nearly 20% of the country’s economic activity, directly supporting nearly 23 million jobs (15% of U.S. employment).
NASDA CEO and Indiana native Ted McKinney shared his support of the report, which was released to coincide with National Ag Day on Tuesday, March 21.
“‘Feeding the Economy‘ in concert with National Ag Day celebrates the collective impact that everyone working to grow, process and produce our food has on the economy. State departments of agriculture recognize that a thriving U.S. agricultural industry feeds our U.S. economy and nourishes the world through international trade. We’re proud that today’s report proves our industry’s continued strength across the states and around the globe,” said McKinney.
