For Josef Newgarden, the twelfth time is the charm!
Newgarden won the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday in the fourth-closest finish in Indianapolis 500 history. It was also his twelfth start in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
After his win, Newgarden joined Team Penske in Victory Circle and was handed an ice-cold bottle of whole milk by Indiana Dairy producer Kerry Estes. The two had met previously as Newgarden was invited to Estes’ farm near Fountaintown in Shelby County last year to shoot a promotional video on behalf of American Dairy Association Indiana.

Newgarden started 17th, but had maneuvered his way to the front of the pack by the time more than three-quarters of the race had been completed. He led only five laps, taking the top spot for the first time for one lap during pit stop cycles on Lap 157. He climbed into the lead for the second time, with all pit stops done, on Lap 193.
On the final lap of the race, Newgarden passed Ericsson on the back straightaway with an outside move just before Turn 3 and snaked down the front straightaway to victory in the No. 2 Shell Powering Progress Team Penske Chevrolet.
